Biography
With a career spanning over five decades, DJ Suiki Lor is a true pioneer in both the music and hairdressing worlds. Known as the "Godfather of Hairdressing" in China, Suiki's passion for music has been equally transformative, making him a legendary figure in the global DJ scene.
Since the mid-1970s, Suiki has been spinning records, starting in San Francisco's vibrant underground bars and house parties, where he captivated audiences from the Black and LGBTQ + communities with his extensive vinyl collection. His journey quickly expanded to mega clubs and iconic events, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and open-minded DJ with an impeccable ear for music.
In the mid-1990s, Suiki co-created the legendary mid-week party *Simply Done* in San Francisco alongside DJs Mark Farina and John Howard, a groundbreaking event that became a staple of the city's nightlife. His influence extended to Hong Kong, where he played a pivotal role in introducing international DJs to Asia. In 1996, he brought techno originator Derrick May to China, followed by house music luminaries like Louie Vega, Derrick Carter, and the Hardkiss brothers. A career highlight came in 1997 when Suiki performed at the monumental Hong Kong handover party, sharing the stage with icons such as Grace Jones, Boy George, and Paul Oakenfold.
Throughout the 2000s, Suiki was a key member of the legendary *Funk Fever* crew in Beijing, a monthly party that became a cultural phenomenon. He also joined forces with iconic DJs Kulu and Andrew Bull (aka DJ El Toro) to form the DJ collective *The Holy Spirit*, performing at exclusive venues like Kee Club in Hong Kong and Shanghai, as well as high-profile events such as the Singapore Formula One races.
Suiki's versatility and deep love for music have seen him perform at major festivals like Hong Kong's *ClockenFIap*, China's *Strawberry Festival*, and the *Shanghai Jazz Festival*. His ability to blend genres, rediscover forgotten gems, and curate future classics has made him a unique force in the DJ world. Known for his marathon sets (reminiscent of the 1970s single-DJ-for-the-night ethos), Suiki continues to rock dance floors across Asia, regularly playing in Shanghai and other cities.
Beyond music, Suiki's legacy as a hairdresser is equally remarkable. As a founder of "Architects and Heros" salons in San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Macau, he revolutionized the hairdressing industry in Greater China by introducing the modern precision techniques.
With 50 years of DJing under his belt - what he humbly calls a "weekend hobby" - Suiki Lor remains a trailblazer, seamlessly bridging the worlds of music and style. Whether he's "doing it to your eardrums" or crafting a masterpiece on the dance floor, Suiki's eclectic taste and boundless passion continue to inspire audiences worldwide.
